Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of dentifrice containing extracts of Taraxacum platycarpum, Lonicera japonica, and triclosan, on dental plaque and gingivitis in a double blind and crossover clinical studies in 19 healthy volunteers who provided a consent for their participation. The Lonicera japonica extracts have been shown antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal and astringic effect. Toothpaste slurries comprised of 3 흐 of toothpaste with 10 ml of distilled water were prepared immediately prior to use. Each volunteer was rinsed with these slurries, twice daily, without dental treatment, toothbrushing and flossing for 14 days, consecutively. At the baseline, 4, 7, 11, and 14 days after the use of test dentifrice slurries, plaque and gingivitis were assessed by using Silness and Loe index, respectively. Placebo dentifrice containing all ingredients except the test- extracts and triclosan was used as a negative control and Colgate Total dentifrice was used as a positive control. The plaque indices at 4, 7,11,14 days after the use of herbal and control dentifrice were 1.5, 1.7, 1.9, 2.0 and 1.3, 1.5, 1.7, 1.8, respectively. The results were analyzed using a one-way ANOVA and Duncan´ s multiple range tests. The herbal dentifrice resulted in a significantly lower plaque index than the control group at 4, 7, 11, 14 days (P (0,05), and Colgate Total dentifrice was significantly lower plaque index at 14 days only (P (0.05), but no significant differences in gingival index were noted among the dentifrices used. Based on the results from those clinical trials we conclude that the test dentifrice containing extracts of Taraxacum platycarpum and Lonicera japonica with triclosan showed an antiplaque property.
